The Heart of Maleshevija

Berovo is a small town of about 7,000 residents, nestled at 850 meters above sea level. Known for its remarkably clean air, dense pine forests, and the beautiful Berovo Lake.

The Maleshevija region, first mentioned in a charter by Byzantine Emperor Basil II in 1020, encompasses two municipalities - Berovo and Pehchevo. The region has over 120 natural springs.

Local Cuisine

Known for local cheese, homemade yogurt, zelnik, potatoes under a roasting lid, and famous honey. Beekeeping is an important tradition.

History

Dimitar Berovski

Dimitar Pop-Georgiev Berovski (1840-1907) was a revolutionary and national hero from Berovo who led the Razlovci Uprising in 1876 - the first organized armed uprising in Maleshevija against Ottoman rule.

OFK Malesh's stadium is named after him - Dimitar Berovski Stadium. A bronze statue of Berovski has stood in the town center since 2012.
